Weekend Recap: Mothers Day

At work on Friday we celebrated the 6th of May, also known as the day after Cinco De Mayo with a Dip Party.  My co worker brought my favorite dip recipe and an old faithful for ANY gathering with the Peanut Butter Ball. Rich's family came for the weekend to celebrate Mothers Day and to see our new place for the first time.  I got a little creative and ambitious and whipped up lemon buttercream icing for my homemade cupcakes from one of my favorite bloggers.  Want to try for yourself?  You can grab the details here on how to make this. 

We had our first grill out evening of the year.  So glad I have such a great grill master for the rest of my life!

A few months ago I taught Sophie to shake and high five. It is her favorite party trick.

I love setting a fun table.  For Mothers Day Rich made a great breakfast spread and we ate off our wedding china. 

I came home from ushering at church to find my father in law and husband sanding down some of our interior doors that wouldn't close.  Our house is almost a 100 years ago with glass door knobs so we have a few stubborn doors that cause us issues.  I am so excited to have working doors again. 

We were able to venture out to walk the beach for the afternoon.  It was a warm but breezy day and there were only a few people on the beach.  I am so grateful we still live near water. 

Sunday evening we cooked out again and enjoyed dinner outside on our deck.  I LOVE our deck and love the chance to share it with family and friends.  I hope we have so many more great memories on this deck.

One of my favorite pieces of the weekend are our new curtains!  My mother in law made them from some fabric we picked up at Joanns. 

Weekend Recap

Ever have one of those weekends where Monday really sneaks up on you?  This morning I could've hit that snooze button a few times and still not have had enough sleep this weekend.  I am trying to live for the Monday but my internal clock says, how many more days until Friday?  

Rich had a good buddy in town visiting for the weekend which was a great chance for the fellas to go do some boy stuff.  You can see what a great time the girls had too with the boys.  Sophie has always been really terrified of Rich's friend Ryan and this trip was no different.  Ellie on the other hand was a committed friend to Ryan and did not want to leave his side much at all the entire weekend. 

 

At work on Friday we had a mini work retreat that ended with a staff lunch.  Our waiter upsized our pizza to this massive 24 inch pizza.  It's hard to tell in the photo, but the pizza takes up the ENTIRE table.  

 On Saturday our neighborhood had a little carnival as a school fundraiser.  You know what's really fun? Mini horses, and this little fair had them for the kids to ride!

 

 Sunday we ventured up to the air show near by and got to take in the sights and sounds.  It was my first air show and I had a blast.  Even though I could not keep up with the boys at all (they talk in military acronyms), it was a really fun time walking around to look at both new and old planes and have the two fellas teach me a few things.    The boys had actually worked on this plane pictured below during their time in Charleston!

 

After the air show we spent a portion of our evening at our church's spring picnic at a park near our house.  One of the most amazing things about finding a church so close to our house is how many events we are able to go to through the church. Between being close to work and our church, I am going to have to really get adjusted when we eventually move and have any sort of work or life commute!  

Weekend Recap

This weekend, y'all, restoring.  From the weather to the massive amount of things we checked out our "to do", I loved. every. second.  This little weekend was one of those weekends I just want to freeze time, because right now, things are just really good.   We got so much done.  And in all of that, truly enjoyed some time together.  Did I mention I love hanging out with my husband, doing....yard work, dishes, church, eating....cleaning...LOWES!  I love it! So, without much delay, here is a bit of a "weekend life" for our life right now. 

Yard work was the name of the game this weekend.   We de-weeded (is that a word?) the front flower bed area of the house and put some more mulch down.  Most of our front yard, minus the whole grass thing, is complete!  Oh hey curb appeal!

Last weekend I finally got around to planting some herbs in the boxes on our deck.  I am not entirely sure how green my thumb is, but I figured with herbs this close to the house, I have zero excuse to not take care of them. There is so much more to come on this little porch this summer that I can barely contain myself!

The girls love hanging out with us on the porch.  They are pretty clingy (the food helps) and it makes for some great family time together after all our hard work. 

 After all the yard work, Rich and I got to throw a bit of catch in the backyard as he gets ready for softball season.  Is there anything more American dream-y than playing catch with your husband in the back yard in your first newlywed home?    We even got Ellie involved, and turns out she is equal lover of tennis balls as she is baseballs now.  Too bad she can't throw :)

A few weeks back Rich surprised me with an awesome fire pit.  We've tried three times now to get a decent fire starting.  Why is this so hard folks? We've tried everything (any recommendations would be so appreciated y'all).  We finally got a bit going this weekend, just enough to get our s'more on and enjoy a cooler spring evening. 

We have a bit of a brunch after church habit these days, and we've had Toast on the top of our places to try.  We finally got to take a visit Sunday.  Just as their name says, everything is served on Toast.  Rich got something that looked like buffalo chicken almost, while I got a pork based taco type deal on toast.  It was great!  It had a very funky-Charleston foodie type feel and is owned by the same folks who own a great biscuit place here in Virginia too, so you know its good if they serve biscuits!

 

 After brunch we ran to my new favorite store (what?!) Lowes and returned some items and grabbed a few must haves for the house as well as some plants to plant on our porch.  Our porch gets very limited sun, so it's a real toss up if these flowers will do much for us.  

While I planted away, Rich had his first practice with the church softball team.  They played for over two hours!  It was a gorgeous day and a wonderful day to be playing some softball.  They have their first game this coming week and I can't wait to get to watch some of the games.

After he came back we met up with our Lifegroupies to celebrate the 31st birthday of one of our friends at no other place than...Chipotle.  Yes.  Afterward we headed back to their house and hung around the fire a bit for stories and friends.  It was a BUSY weekend, and with a friend coming to town this weekend, I know we will be in for another around the clock weekend this weekend.  But, this is life right now, and its pretty dang good.  

Birthday Week Adventures: Savannah

My Birthday celebration lasted three day this year thanks to my awesome husband who attempted to keep the party rolling well past my actual day.  Unfortunately I got a pretty nasty bug and wasn't able to celebrate much more than two days.  Nevertheless we got to celebrate my birthday with my favorite things: food and adventure!

 

 My birthday dinner was at Fish House this year which is the same restaurant that has been the backdrop of a few great celebrations for us in Charleston, namely where we celebrated Rich coming home from overseas, our engagement, and now my birthday!  They have my favorite shrimp and grits recipe in all of Charleston.

For dessert we were served the most delicious molten chocolate cake to share. Chocolate is a food group for me.

 After dinner we partook in my most favorite activities these days, binge watching our new favorite show Parenthood in our pajamas.  This is 31 y'all...

 

We were supposed to go our with friends  Friday to celebrate my birthday but unfortunately I was way too sick to go out. We stayed in Friday night watching the news on the awful Paris attacks.

 Saturday took us on a bucket list item of a day trip to Savannah. We had a perfect day to go visit, great weather, and a wonderful chance to just walk around and see the city.  We loved all the little parks and squares and walking around into little stores.  While we enjoyed the city, we still vote Charleston as our #1 Low country City, but we may be a bit biased.

Weekend Recap

It's Monday already?  I'm not sure how that happened so fast. October weather in Charleston is certainly making up for the disaster that was September rain.  We had another weekend of beautiful skies and temperatures.  I am scared for the temps to dip any lower than they are now.  My southern blood cannot always handle anything below 60.  

Our weekend was relatively calm.  Rich and I met thanks to the Cooper Bridge Run almost three years ago but since that day we have yet to run a race together so a few weeks ago we decided to sign up for the James Island Connector Run since we are missing the fateful Cooper Run this year due to our move.  Despite it being a 5k, it was tough!  The fact that I didn't train and the course had 3 hills really threw this retired runner for a loop.  But, the course was beautiful and it's always fun to get out of bed early and get some Saturday morning exercise in.

 

Following our 5k, it was only right we indulge in some French delicacies in a new French bakery we've heard so much about.  If you remember, we were supposed to be in Paris and London this week, so getting to taste some delicious French pastries was just the treat we needed.

That night we went over to Daniel Island for the island's annual Pumpkin Walk.  All the neighborhoods on the island get together and carve pumpkins all afternoon and then display them in the park lit up and with luminaries for folks to stroll through.  Despite it being a warm night, it certainly made Halloween feel so soon and so real.  I LOVE the magic of Halloween, even as an adult.  I remember how exciting trick or treating was and I am so hoping we get some at our house this Saturday.

Sunday was my traditional church time.  I got one of my favorite seats at church right next to the candles.  

 

Sunday night we had some Wake Forest friends visiting Charleston.  We had an awesome time taking them to one of our favorite spots off the peninsula, Crave, laughing and catching up.  I love living in a town where folks come through for visits or vacations!
